Just over a month ago People Together was set up, fully funded by my business SOCINT in response to the need for improvements to the resilience of our communities – in particular given the COVID19 crisis and the way it has transformed life for us all in such a short space of time.
I don’t run a massive corporation and haven’t received any donations or grants, so I’m running this on the fumes of sleepless nights and long days, making sure my own business is still paying the bills at home. I’m running a sister project too, funded on the same wing and a prayer, over at Home Grown.
I’m not the kind of person who can just sit back and do nothing. I’ve learned in life that, whatever little you have, you have to pay things forward. (I’ve been down in the gutter before and the kindness of people helped me through when I was starving, so this is the very least I can do).
We all have to try within our means, right? Otherwise life is just a spectator sport.
Considering, then, this project doesn’t really have a budget we’re doing okay.
We’ve got over a thousand followers on Twitter now and our little Facebook page is heading towards the 500 fans mark – though we’ve reached tens of thousands of people with our take on easy to understand public safety videos and key messaging designed to help people stay safe. Even this little website has had thousands of hits and has several hundred registered users already.
It’s nearly a month since we published a report on warning signs in the COVID19 mortality rates, bringing their accuracy into question based our analysis of the weekly ONS data and calling for more journalistic scrutiny.
Judging by the headlines today, it was the right thing to do and I’m proud of it. People deserve the truth.
But I don’t really want this to be a flash in the pan thing – my intention is that this resource is going to be around permanently, helping our communities become better prepared for whatever lies ahead, whether it be another virus, climate events, or a prolonged economic catastrophe.
With that in mind, I’ve continued to work on the resources and want to let you know about what’s new.
First, Jobs. You can now search and apply for jobs straight from People Together. If you are logged in you can even post your Resume and make it searchable to employers.
I’ve also made it FREE for all employers to list jobs on the website. Because our businesses need supporting and our furloughed workforce does to.
Next, and this is the bit I’m most excited about really, I want to tell you about the Academy.
The mission is to empower individuals and communities to become more resilient and more effective at working together.
My personal aim is to write and release a new course every week. The first, which teaches you how to use the resources of the People Together platform, is available now.
All you need to do is login and click “Courses” on the Academy menu.
That’s all from me really, I just wanted to keep you all in the loop on what’s happening.
While it would be nice to have a massive budget to work with, that’s just not the case and I’ve no intention of running any big crowdfunders or anything like that.
However, I’m not so proud or daft as to not take help if it’s offered. So – and this is entirely down to you – if you want to throw a cup of coffee at the running costs of People Together you can click this little button:
Anyway, I need to get back to work. This candle won’t burn at both ends on its own.
